ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION

In this groundbreaking production which debuted at Yale Repertory Theatre in 2019, Lumen Repertory Theatre continues to push the boundaries of bold, professional theatre in Northeast Florida. Cadillac Crew follows the lives of four women on the day of a civil rights protest in 1960s Virginia, offering a vivid portrayal of the often-overlooked contributions of Black women to the movement. Through sharp dialogue and dynamic storytelling, Tori Sampson’s work illuminates the intersection of race, gender, and activism, resonating deeply with contemporary audiences.

This regional premiere promises to be an unforgettable theatrical experience, challenging perceptions, sparking critical conversations, and celebrating the bold voices that have shaped history.

During the final days of a national election, this live performance material drips with relevance and something important to say. And it says it in both creative and bold ways.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORS

This is not a historical play; it is a piece of fiction. And yet it has awakened us to some very real history that is exceedingly relevant today.

Good art can do that.

We didn’t know about the Cadillac crews of the 1960s organized by Dorothy Height until we began to research and prepare for this play. Our actresses and creative crew were also unaware of this astounding and forward-thinking part of the civil rights movement. This is because not all of history is told, nor represented, nor contemplated in our public spaces.

As artists, we weren’t so much interested in teaching a history lesson, but in seeing how our art form could shed light on the persons, situations, and contexts of the material, and then provoke questions, reflection, and maybe even some unease.

Good art can do that, too.

Our approach has been to focus on the relationships of these powerhouse women: the friendship, the conflict, the points of agreement and contention. We have emphasized the actors’ physicality as a means to get to the inner lives of these characters. Enveloping all of this with the technical tools of sound, light, and projection, we hope to highlight unsung voices and narratives.

And maybe, just maybe, this bit of art can inspire us to not allow future voices to be erased.

We offer you this bold production to close out Lumen Rep’s 2024: BOLD Season. We think you will be moved.

—Katie Johnston and Brian Niece
